Satsooma used the Retrofit West training grant to get Heat Geek training under their belt and step into installing heat pumps with confidence.

Satsooma entered the heat pump sector as newcomers.

The Retrofit West Training Grant made it possible for them to complete Heat Geek training and gain the confidence to start taking on actual heat pump installs.

Satsooma’s experience shows, to achieve successful installations, appropriate training and a thorough technical understanding are essential.

Starting with the right knowledge

Satsooma is a small team of two engineers and a traditional heating specialist. When they first explored air source heat pumps, conversations through Retrofit West gave them a clear view of the challenges homeowners faced. They saw how much misinformation was circulating and how many issues were caused by heat pump systems that had not been designed and installed well. It confirmed that they needed the appropriate technical understanding before offering installs to customers.

Choosing Heat Geek

The team wanted training that went beyond surface-level knowledge. Heat Geek are known for their in-depth, practical approach to heat pump training and they are trusted by trades across the sector. The Heat Geek Mastery course offered the depth they were looking for. As a new business, putting all three team members through the course would be expensive. The Retrofit West Training Grant made it possible for the whole team to complete the full Heat Geek Mastery programme for free.

“The Heat Geek training is the gold standard. If you want the right technical understanding, this is the course.”

Martin Paton, Satsooma

What the training changed

All three members passed the Mastery qualification. They found the training genuinely useful because it gave them detailed technical understanding and a clear, structured approach to designing and setting up systems. It also helped them identify common issues they had seen elsewhere and understand how to prevent them. The course gave them confidence to speak to homeowners clearly and approach early installs with a stronger technical base.

Applying it in real homes

Satsooma have now completed their first installs and achieved MCS accreditation. The training has shaped how they approach every job. The design principles they learned help them set up systems correctly and avoid the mistakes they had seen in other installations.

Satsooma also offer a complementary one month post-install visit. This gives them the chance to check the heat pump is running as it should, tweak settings to optimise performance and answer questions once the homeowner has had time to use the system.

A recommendation for other trades

Satsooma believe that strong technical training is essential for anyone wanting to successfully install heat pumps. The Heat Geek Mastery training gave them the depth of knowledge they needed, and the Retrofit West grant made accessing that training possible at the right stage.

Satsooma’s progress shows what the right training can unlock. If you are a tradesperson thinking about heat pumps, this could be your next step.
